Shumen Hosted the National Kyokushin Karate Championship

On March 16, 2025, the first National Kyokushin Karate Championship of the year took place at “Arena Shumen,” bringing together 150 competitors from 27 clubs, all members of the Bulgarian Karate Kyokushin Federation (BKKF). The competition featured participants across various age groups—men, women, juniors, and cadets.

The tournament began with the Bulgarian national anthem and a taiko drum performance, adding a ceremonial atmosphere to the event. “The National Championship was crucial not only for rankings but also as a qualification for upcoming international tournaments and the selection of the national team,” shared Sensei Zachari Damyanov, head coach of Bulgaria’s men’s and women’s national teams, shared for shum.bg.

Following the official opening, the two tatamis came alive with intense and dynamic matches. In some cases, referees used the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) system, introduced by BKKF two years ago, to resolve disputes and ensure fair competition.

During the final awards ceremony, eight special prizes were also presented. The “Most Technical Fighter” awards went to Rostislav Todorov from SC “Nihonto,” Varna, and Stilyana Merazova from SC “Nadezhda,” Gabrovo, in the men’s and women’s categories. Among juniors and cadets, Plamen Dishkov from SC “Sentoki,” Burgas, and Alexandra Ivanova from SC “Okami Dojo,” Asenovgrad, received the honor.

The “Best Fighting Spirit” awards were given to Kristian Ivanov from SC “Kyokushin,” Shumen, and Maya Mihaylova from SC “Nihonto,” Varna, in the men’s and women’s divisions. Among juniors and cadets, Kaаn Akiev from SC “Nihonto,” Varna, and Radosveta Mincheva from SC “Armeec,” Sofia, were recognized for their outstanding determination.

Congratulations to all the fighters for their remarkable performances! Best of luck in the upcoming “Vereya Cup,” set to take place in April in Stara Zagora.
